Giraffe Conservation Foundation - New German Web Site Version

Written by Stephen Nzioka / Mar 26, 2010 / Comments

The Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF), www.giraffeconservation.org, is dedicated to securing a future for all giraffe populations and (sub)species in the wild. That's what they do and boy don't they love it. Countless research expeditions and the works. Working on this project has opened my eyes to some of the things we are privileged to have that we so often take for granted; wildlife, beautiful land forms, beaches...
Please pay a visit to GCF's web site and learn more about the 'tall beauties'. Their 'Blogs from the Bush' is a must read.

More than 65% of people around the world don't speak English, duh! So having a web site that can be read in multiple languages is crucial if you don't want to lose any possible extra traffic. And that is exactly what GCF wants. Also, offering your visitors to read your web content in different languages is a great way to stand out from your typical competitors.

There are different options for translating a site into additional languages. There are many tools out there that can automatically translate a full website in multiple languages; Google Language Tools, Yahoo! Babel Fish, SWeTE, just to name a few. It is also very important to keep in mind that such translations are made automatically, so don't expect them to be perfect. The only sure way then is to hire a pro translator. This would cost you an extra penny but would have more impact.

GCF has continued to rely on its experts and friends who from time to time volunteer in translating some of the sites content. What they do is send me the translated pages in Word format and I take it from there. Finding how best to incorporate the different character sets in the sites database and at the same time not compromising the design layout of the site or the programming logic which is fond of throwing a myriad of exceptions (read errors) when handling weird language characters like ç, à, Ü, ö, ß,.... Anyway let me cut short the geek speak before I lose some of you.

Well, that typically sums up my week. Go to www.giraffeconservation.org, top-right corner, and click on a Flag for the scoop.

And feel free to express your interest in contributing to the translation of  GCF web site.

I am seriously pushing for Swahili :)
